On Monday, August 14, twelve of us from the Lesoteka company met at the sawmill in Šentjanž at 7 a.m. and, after morning coffee, headed to the civil protection headquarters in Dravograd. There, we were informed about where and whom we could help, and were given general instructions on what to do at that location. We were sent to the flood-affected area near Rone (Podklanec – towards Ravne na Koroškem).
After meeting with the locals, whose houses and yards were flooded, we got to work. Together with the machinery operators – excavator drivers from the company SGP Pokeržnik, d.o.o., we started arranging the surroundings of two houses. With good cooperation, we managed to quickly arrange the slope to the first house, and then we divided into two groups. The first group helped with the removal of flooded furniture, parquet, and inventory, while the second arranged the surroundings of the other house. After a well-deserved break, we joined forces again and together finished arranging the second house. We completed the work between 2 and 3 p.m. The kind locals served us with pastries and drinks, making our work even more enjoyable.
The gratitude of the people in distress and our feeling that we had indeed done something, albeit small, and made a difference, left us with feelings of gratitude and pride. It was nice to leave the village in a different state, especially after a lady, whose house had been flooded, told us that we brought optimism and positive energy for the future. Anton Trstenjak wrote: “We hear people say that kindness is an orphan, but I say that kindness is not an orphan, the one who is not kind is an orphan.” This was also our guiding principle.
